Melina Duterte and Jay Som have been touring in support of her sophomore album Anak Ko (released via Polyvinyl Records). On October 25th the tour passed through Brooklyn for a sold out performance at Elsewhere. This was our first time seeing them perform since they played Music Hall of Williamsburg last summer.

This incarnation of Jay Som featured a new member to the live touring band that also features Oliver Pinnell on guitar, Zachary Elsasser on drums and Dylan Allard on bass. They have come a long way since I saw them for the first time at Baby’s All Right in Spring 2017, become bother better and more confident players and delivering a strong live performance the suited the mature and more ambitious new songs that makeup Anak Ko and also change the dynamic of older material played, such as “Turn Into” and “The Bus Song.”

Although Duterte admitted before the show started that she was a bit under the weather, she and the rest of the band still delivered a tight and measured performance that did more than justice to the new album, it highlighted and reminded why she’s one of the most promising songwriters of this modern age.
