There haven’t been as many bands as prevalent on the summer festival circuit than My Morning Jacket. The group have been touring hard and wide in support of their rather wonderful new album The Waterfall, which they released this May via ATO Records.
Earlier in the summer I caught them at Boston Calling and Governors Ball. They weren’t announced as a performer at Newport Folk Festival, but some suspected that they may make an appearance, considering that the unannounced set went directly into Roger Waters set, and MMJ served as Roger Waters backing band in the past.
Still, getting My Morning Jacket as a surprise act was one of the many treats of the Newport Folk Festival weekend, and they ripped through their performance with as much energy and fire as you’d expect for them. Although there was this feeling of anticipation that had a hold on both the band and the audience, as we were both in anticipation of the set that came next.
