Multi-instrumentalist Mitch Davis has released his debut 7″ EP today with A-side track single “Bear The Cold” via Arbutus Records.
The track brings to mind other multi-instrumentalists Stevie Wonder and Todd Rundgren. That strong bass line through the song is such a groove that you would be excused for missing the lyrics. Same goes for those dreamy piano chords he hits during the chorus. When that saxophone solo hits two-thirds of the way through the song you are sent to another planet.
The song’s lyrics deal with what happens when a relationship ends. How do you hold on to those memories without some form of sadness or anger. I truly love songs that have instrumentation that goes in one direction to only have lyrics that completely go in the opposite direction.
Davis said of the track “I had the bass line for this one written and it was just floating around in my head for probably 5 years, so it was a huge relief to finally give it some life. Despite the bouncy groove, the song is about navigating uncertainty in a relationship showing signs of collapse and the processing/attempts to shed unwanted memories after the fact. Maybe everyone knows when it’s better to rip off the band-aid than ride the ups and downs of oscillating emotions, but it’s hard advice to follow. I also just feel incapable of forgetting some elements of the past, so it’s about trying to come to terms with carrying that whether you want to or not.” |
