Switzerland psychedelic rockers Annie Taylor have released a double A-side single “The Fool/Unspoken” on Taxi Gauche Records.
“The Fool” was the closer of their 2020 debut record Sweet Mortality. The song screams 70’s glam rock and as the song builds to its conclusion we go further and further into fuzz-infused psychedelia. The vocals become more distorted and distant as the guitars pile onto one another and take over. I love the synths that swirl about in the background through the entire song. They give the entire track a sense of looming danger and seductiveness that we could use more of in music.
Of “The Fool” lead vocalist Gini Jungi said:
For me, “The Fool” is definitely the most meaningful song on the record. I wrote it with great heartbreak and remember even shedding a few tears when I first played it on my guitar. It’s about longing for someone’s love and how you catch yourself always spinning aimlessly in circles, making a ‘fool’ of yourself.
“Unspoken”, a newly recorded song, is the polar opposite of “The Fool”, a slower calm acoustic guitar driven song. Jungi’s vocals are layered to make it sound like a choir is singing and as the music swells to a crescendo more and more of her vocals are added in. It’s a powerful track full and it feels like the band is making a statement in the direction they could go next.
The recording session for these songs had a fun creative mood to it, as Jungi says:
I showed our producer David Langhard our self-made demo of the songs and explained with weird sound imitations, what we want the guitars to sound like. After 10 minutes into recording the songs, he brought a little fuzzy elephant into the recording cabin and told me to strum the strings with the elephant as a plectrum. The fuzzy plectrum changed the sound of the guitar a lot and the outcome are dreamy, soft guitar vibes.
