WOODIST puts out some of the coolest music. Today they have released a new single by John Andrews & The Yawns titled “New California Blue” off of Cookbook out May 14th.

The song is a four and a half minute slow 70’s psychedelic funky rock song. It feels as though you’re walking through a dream while listening it. The piano playing is so smooth. It has the feel that the notes came out of thin air as if you were seeing a jazz artist create a masterpiece out of nothing.

The whole track, while it envelopes your ears, has the sense of being just out of reach. John’s voice, while clear, almost blends right in with the instrumentation. The flute that comes out of nowhere in the back half of the song should put an instant smile on your face. The bass line is so funky that you won’t be able to help but just vibe out in your living room.

John said that “New California Blue is an ode to Joni Mitchel. She was the soundtrack to a pretty crazy time in my life & i got a lot of mileage out of her music so I wanted to somehow say thank you to her through song. It’s the first song I recorded for “Cookbook”. I tracked it in the old farmhouse The Yawns lived in back in 2017”

The whole record is fantastic and you can preorder it here. Check out the song and video below.
