Formed in Shanghai a little more than a decade ago, Rainbow Danger Club was one of the best rock bands in the city. The band relocated to Austin, TX a few years ago and is now the solo project of Jesse Munson. Today sees the release of new single “Forced Perspective”.
The song deals with our dependence on social media and technology. The music is upbeat, bright, and dance hall ready while the lyrics are about the dystopian technological nightmare we are in. I absolutely love that the vocals never seem to stay in the middle and are constantly panning. It definitely makes you feel like social media can with too much swirling around you at all times.
The video is a kaleidoscope of shots to trick your eyes. It pairs so well with the synths and vocal layers littered throughout the song. There is a strong Radiohead influence here, at least to my ears. Jesse’s vocals just give that Thom Yorke vibe to me and I cannot unhear it.
On the song Jesse said
“its a summary of the feelings we have on social media: a little mania, a little rage, a little paranoia, a little jealousy. On top of that the algorithms are learning about what “engages us” and unfortunately what really does that also enrages us. We are also connected now more than ever because of this but it ironically is leading to being far more disconnected from one another.”
The self-produced song came about due to a lot of free time with the lockdowns of the past year. Be on the lookout for more new music in the coming in the next few weeks.
