Hotels on Mars, aka Mat Weitman, has released his debut single “The Worst Year Ever” off of Grief Museum that is set to be released on February 12.
The opening guitar chords and whistling already make you feel like you’re finally coming alive and a new day is dawning. Of course this song is very much about 2020, the year the world pretty much stopped. Mat’s vocals are here to ease you out of the hellscape and into the new year.
This song has cosmic folk vibes, think Hiss Golden Messenger when he dips into that bag of tricks. The lyrics are hard to hear as some of this still going on (“the city was devoid of people, they were locked up in their houses), but it’s the truth and as a send-off we need to hear it. If the whole album has these vibes, it could wind up one of the best of the year.
