Last year saw Tom Morello return with his new solo album The Atlas Underground, which was released via Mom + Pop Music. We caught him a few times live in support of the new album last year, first at his headlining show at Le Poisson Rouge and then a brief appearance at Brooklyn Steel as a part of Mom + Pop’s 10 year anniversary celebration.

On May 14th Morello returned to New York for a headlining show at Irving Plaza where he gave us a mix of new songs as well as snippets of favorites from all his projects throughout the year. He is a man of the people and as such, started the show in the middle of the crowd where he performed all of opening track “Where It’s At Ain’t What It Is.” It was hard to deny the power of hearing a melody of some of his great guitar work in songs such as Rage Against The Machine’s “Guerilla Radio,” “Sleep Now in the Fire” and Audioslave’s “Like A Stone.” While most of the evening was dedicated to the rock, Morello also offered some tender moments, such as “The Garden of Gethsemane” or even his cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “The Ghost of Tom Joad.”

He ended the show with an invitation for the audience to join him on stage as he ended the show with the 1-2 punch of Rage’s “Killing in the Name,” and a cover of John Lennon and The Plastic Ono Band’s “Power to the People,” giving plenty of fans plenty of unforgettable memories to take home with them.
