On January 24 Mom + Pop held a private “Not A Grammy Party,” a way to showcase and celebrate the upcoming new album releases from both Sunflower Bean (who are new signees to the label) and Hinds.
It’s hard to believe that I last personally caught Hinds back in January 2016 even though they’ve played NYC plenty since then (and many of the shows we have covered). They gave us a typically fun performance that featured plenty of old favorites mixed with new songs from new album I Don’t Run, which will be released on April 6. There were some sound issues but Hinds still owned the stage and the crowd had a great time along with them.
Sunflower Bean has had a live presence as consistent as anyone in New York (we just saw them last November) since their breakthrough at CMJ way back in 2014. They’ve come a long way since then and are finally releasing album number two with Twentytwo in Blue on March 23. Their sound on the new album is a bit more polished in a glam fashion that shows off some slight Fleetwood Mac influence that fits them well.
These guys always put on a good live show, but just like Hinds, their set was unfortunately plagued by sound issues that the venue just couldn’t fix. They gave us their all, running through a mix of songs both new and old that was lively, energetic and sharp. The issues never got resolved and unfortunately, the band had the cut things short as a result. But no worries, as they will be back for a headlining show of their own at Bowery Ballroom on April 26 (get tickets here) where they will play the whole album in full.
