I never imagined I’d get to see “Weird Al” Yankovic perform, let a lone get to photograph him playing live. Yet, I got to see him not only once this summer at Governors Ball, but again late in July when he returned to New York for a performance at Port Chester’s prestigious Capitol Theatre.
Yankovic converted the normally GA area of The Cap into a seated area. The amazing thing about Weird Al is that his fan base is as diverse as they come. Fans of all ages converged in order to take in a night of fun from the comedic cover master himself.
While getting to see him perform at a festival was a treat in its own right, getting to see a full show from everyone’s favorite weirdo was a different experience entirety. He began the show outside of the theatre, surprising fans by coming down the aisle before taking the stage. As you expect from a “Weird Al” show, you had tons of costumes changes, funny videos in between songs, and crazy interactions with lucky fans seated towards the front. Yankovic has been doing this long enough to know how to put on an entertaining show, and he delivered the goods and then some.
He performed songs from throughout his impressive career, with “Fat,” “Foil,” “Amish Paradise,” “Yoda,” and “White & Nerdy,” segway and all, standing out as particular highlights of a night absolutely filled with them. There wasn’t a moment where my mind deviated from anything other than what a grand old time I was having watching Weird Al do his thing, and that my friends is a sign of a master at work.
I hope to see Weird Al again sometime again in the future, because it’s as good of a mix of comedy and music as you’ll ever fine. There’s no one quite like Weird Al.
