Congrats Bahamas, you’re the first act I ever saw at Newport Folk Festival (for whatever thats worth). The group is the project led by Toronto native Afie Jurvanen, who delighted the crowd with offerings from his new album Bahamas Is Afie, which he released last year via Brushfire Records.
His take on folk-rock was a pitch perfect fit for the laid back, stripped down nature of the festival, playing a low stage that featured a seating area with folding chars in front of the stage. As a result, all the photographers in the photo pit shot their set from their knees, or sitting down. This was a first for me, but it’s the approach of Newport not to disturb fans enjoying the music, something we can all certainly get behind.
This was my first time seeing Bahamas live, and I enjoyed what I was able to catch from the set. Hopefully I’ll catch a full set from him back here in New York sooner than later.
