After a handful of showcase performances during CMJ, Purling Hiss and Meatbodies returned to New York to play one of the final shows at the soon to be closed DIY venue Death By Audio.
First came a set from Yonatan Gat on the floor of the venue. Gat and his two bandmates brought the rock up close and personal. Gat weaved through the crowd singing directly to onlookers, even taking the beanie off of one fan and wearing it as he performed. It was a fitting performance that fit the DBA aesthetic.
Up next was Meatbodies, who I saw play at a guitar shop along with Ty Segall at SXSW this year. Their set featured the noisy guitar rock offerings found on their debut album, which was released this year. Meatbodies have fun while they’re playing, and it shows.
I missed all of Purling Hiss’ CMJ shows but made up for it by catching them at DBA, which seemed like a pretty fitting fit for the Philadelphia trio. The Mike Polizze-led band recently released new album Weirdon on Drag City and it features a nice chunk of psych-rock offering that hit with plenty of fuzzy goodness. The group delivered a tight performance that proves that rock n’ roll isn’t dead, you just gotta dig a little deeper and find rock solid bands such as Purling Hiss.
