Drowners, who released their debut self-titled album this January via Frenchkiss, played an early day set on Friday that was fairly appropriate considering The Strokes would be playing the next day. Drowners radiate The Strokes both musically and through their model-esque looks and too-cool style.

I briefly caught some of their opening set for Arctic Monkeys at Webster Hall last year, but this was my first time taking them in live properly. Lead singer Matthew Hitt has a strong confidence on stage, and who can blame him? He has barrades of female fans screaming at him at all times. It wasn’t surprising to learn that he is also a model. The band has only been around for a few years now but already seem quite established and ready to conquer bigger stages soon enough.

Their slick guitar rock is always appreciated from me, even if there’s somewhat a lack of variety. Drowners make music that is very likable and easy to please, a perfect gateway for the rest of the weekend of music.

Find more photos of their set, posted below.
