Imagine, if you will, Kick-Ass meets Wanted with a little Connery/Moore-era Bond, and you’ve got The Secret Service, or as it’s now known Kingsman: The Secret Service. It helps that the three films are based on graphic novel properties … all by Mark Millar.
Kingsman: The Secret Service finds Eggsy (newcomer Taron Egerton), a street-smart teenage crook, being recruited to join the Kingsmen, an elite British secret service outfit that serves as the modern-day Knights of the Realm. The cast of older agents (and most likely a villain or two) is rounded out by Colin Firth, Mark Strong, Samuel L. Jackson, and Michael Caine – at least they can be seen in the trailer. Mark Hamill is also in the cast, along with a few celebrity cameos according to the film’s Wikipedia profile, but I’ll believe them when I see them.
While the assembled directorial talent seems familiar (down to the co-written script from Jane Goldman and Matthew Vaughn), something about the trailer seems fresh. It could be the music from The Doors, the spy tech … or that Colin Firth is in what may be a slightly camp spy thriller. Personally, I enjoyed his refined turn in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, but this promises to be nothing like it.
Kingsman: The Secret Service hits theaters on October 24, 2014.
