Lily Allen

Believe it or not, it’s been four years since we’ve heard new music from British darling, Lily Allen. She’s been plenty busy since the release of her last album It’s Not Me, It’s You: getting married, giving birth to two children, and launching her own label, In The Name Of.

That all changed yesterday, as she has returned with a music video for a new single titled “Hard Out Here.” The video is made specifically to mark her comeback, starting with a mock surgery to get rid of weight from her pregnancies, and then trying and failing with her manager to get a performance spot on American late night talk shows. Then she engages in a dance with half naked girls that is a clear stab at Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines.”

The song itself, isn’t her best. It’s a fun song at times, but it’s lacking the immediate smack and shine that her best tracks have. She still maintains that wonderful sarcastic style of hers lyrically, so that’s good to see.

Still, I’m just glad to see her back at it, and maybe the rest of the material that will fill out her eventually new (third) album will be better.
