I discovered the Chicago band Yawn after seeing this video of them performing at SXSW. My reaction went something like this: “Holy shit, they sound just like Animal Collective. Hell, the singer literally sounds like Panda Bear on that live video. They wear their AC collective’s very well though. They are able to fuse multiple harmonies with a wide variety of sounds to create something pretty special. With borrowed Panda Bear vocals and tribal afro-beat sounds percussion, there is plenty of reasons why music fans are going to dig these guys.
They gave away their 2009 debut EP for free and you can still download it here. It’s a well balanced effort that showcases the bands talent and ability to write a strong set of diverse songs. I shared two of my favorite songs from their EP below. Check out the worldly sounds on “Kind of Guy” and the super guitar riff on “Empress”
