Leon Bridges has hit the big time. Long gone are the days where he would play modest rooms like Mercury Lounge or even croon his way that reminded of old-school greats like Sam Cooke. With the release of his new album Good Thing (via Columbia Records), Bridges has found a bigger, poppier direction that has helped him with the ability to sell out bigger venues such as two nights at Radio City Music Hall which he did on the first weekend of October.
We caught night 1 of Radio City and it was quite a feat to see Bridges come out as a true performer, equally putting as much importance of newly incorporated soulful dance moves as his vocals. Kicking off with two new songs (“If It Feels Good (Then It Must Be)” and “Bad Bad News”) overwhelmed some self-awareness and realized that people were overwhlemed by all this “newness” and he took them back a bit with debut album offering “Better Man.”
It was quite a sight to see Bridges and his band fill out Radio City, with all the swagger and confidence that it takes to make it in the way that Bridges has; truly one of the more encouraging success stories of recent memory.
