After catching Eagulls over at Rough Trade on May 9, I walked a few blocks to catch a set from the always rowdy good time that is Atlanta, Georgia’s Black Lips. The group haven’t released an album since Underneath the Rainbow in 2014 (Vice Records) but they stopped by to bring their swamp-rock goodness anyway.
This was my first time catching The Lips since the departure of guitarist Ian St. Pe, with the band’s original guitarist Jack Hines returning. He brought a intense energy to the band that focused a lot of the energy on him, balancing out the now somewhat more subdued moments from Cole Alexander, Jared Swilley and Joe Bradley. This isn’t the same Black Lips that would make out with one another and then piss on stage, but they still had the Brooklyn crowd worked into a sweaty fervor, and that means they did their job.
