On October 29, Trevor Powers’ Youth Lagoon returned to New York for a performance at Webster Hall. This was his second return trip to New York since September, when he played a much more personal show at Rough Trade NYC in support of his new album Savage Hills Ballroom (released via Fat Possum Records).
Little did I know that months later Powers would announce that his time as Youth Lagoon is coming to an abrupt end with his remaining 2016 tour dates (most are which in Europe or in his hometown of Boise, Idaho) acting as the final shows. So fans who attended the Webster Hall thinking it was just another chance to see the band were mistaken. It was actually the last time we will get to see the band perform.
Like Rough Trade, the show featured almost only new material from Savage Hills Ballroom. Even without knowing it would be their final show I was hoping that they would’ve played some more older material, but now with his intention to end Youth Lagoon, it’s pretty clear why he decided to limit how much he took from his earlier days with the group.
I’m sad to see Youth Lagoon go, but glad I got to see him one last time.
Find some photos from the performance posted below, including shots of opener Moon King, who we saw a few times earlier last year.
