After years of teasing us with singles and EP (we called them a band to watch in 2014), Australian/Swedish electro-pop group Kate Boy released their debut album One via Iamsound Records.
Only a lot has changed since I saw them for the first time in 2014 as a part of CMJ. Right before the tour, of the groups longtime members Hampus Nordgren Hemlin left the band (he contributed to the album), leaving just Kate Akhurst and Markus Dextegen as the remaining members. Seeing them at Baby’s All Right on November 14 (I headed over after catching El Vy again), this was a jarring discovery. The band still sounded great, but there was definitely a presence missing that could have helped propel the performance to that next level. Given how recent that Hemlin’s departure was, I have to give a ton of credit to Akhurst and Dextegen for finding a way to fight through and still give an enthusiastic and fun performance that had Baby’s All Right as hot and sweaty as I’ve seen it in some time.
These guys are meant to be seen live, where you can just shut out the rest of the world, shut up, and dance.
