Liam Finn is a New Zealand-based singer-songwriter who is the son of Crowded House’s Neil Finn – of which he joined in 2020. He recently returend with his new album, The Howl, which was released in April via Occasional Music.

The opening title track and single “The Howl” actually appears on Crowded House’s 2024 album Gravity Stairs, re-recorded and re-imagined. His version is the original one, that captures a raw and honest level of sincerity and a shimmering nature that feels like it could’ve been a bit hit in the early 2000s. There’s a really upbeat nature to it, that is also blended with a melancholic feeling of sadness at the same time.

Speaking on the track, he adds:

“The Howl is like speeding down the road through a perpetual blue dusk. It’s about the Groundhog Day-like cycles we repeat in relationships, hoping for a different outcome. Isn’t that the definition of madness?”
