Rindert Lammers is a Nijmegen, Netherlands-based musician who released their debut EP, Thank You Kirin Kiki, on April 18th via Western Vinyl. The album and title track is inspired by a beach scene from the 2018’ film Shoplifters by Hirokazu Kore-eda.
“Sleep Well Hiroshi Yoshimura,” is a standout track from the EP, one that features a speaker reads a comment from a Hiroshi Yoshimura video on YouTube, along with spellbinding saxophone from Joseph Shabason. It’s a riveting piece of work, one that you could see perfectly soundtracking a movie in the same vein as Shoplifters or Drive My Car.
Speaking on the track, Lammers adds:
“My brother and I noticed there were so many beautiful, personal responses under these YouTube videos. So, we had various similar YouTube comments recorded by random people on the internet, mentioning that we wanted to set them to music. Eventually, little remained of that idea, but this YouTube comment/voice clip continued to touch me.”
The appropriately titled “Closing Credits” is the releases’ closing track, a gorgeous sentimental closing statement, with layers of ambient jazz and cinematic strings that all combine to something stirring, inspiring, and touching in a most inspiring fashion. Not to mention some killer saxophone.
