Moon Blue is the artistic project of multi-instrumentalist, George Appleton, who was born in the UK, but based in Rome.

The solo project began in a small, isolated studio apartment during a long winter during one of the covid lockdowns. He released his debut single “Beneath the Moon” and two years later moved to Bologna, but found himself in a new sort of isolation as a foreigner in a new city. This experience gave birth to the debut EP ‘The Moonlight Disco’, which came out in 2023 on 777, and Factory Flaws.

He’s since returned with his latest single, the gorgeously chill “Roma Starlight”. The track harnesses a lot of early 2010s chillwave indie such as Small Black, Neon Indian and Washed Out. Groovy and vibrant production and beats, but blended with a wholesome amounts of melancholy.

Speaking about his latest single he explains:

I feel content and at peace. This felt like a distant dream when I started Moon Blue, but now I’m here. Despite being reminded daily of my slowly getting older, I realise that with the weight of this realisation, and the realisation that my friends are growing up and my family is getting on, there is a sense of liberation that comes with finally feeling that I’m coming into my own. ‘Roma Starlight’ is a reflection of this. I enrolled back at school and am a few years older than most of my classmates, and although that can be isolating, I’m totally at peace with it. Going through this whilst being in a city as old and as beautiful as Rome is humbling, and the song is about all of this. I’m getting older, but I’m also becoming wiser, happier and more at home in myself, whilst simultaneously living in one of the most beautiful and iconic cities in the world. I feel lucky and grateful to have this experience and feel that in a roundabout way, ‘Roma Starlight’ is about this”.
