Gareth Inkster is a singer-songwriter living in Hamilton, Ontario that earlier this year release his single “Ode (For Elliott Smith)”, indeed a musical tribute to one of his heroes, Elliott Smith.

The track features some 70s classic rock and folk guitar work that blends into a jammy arena, while also capturing elements of Smith’s sound as well. It’s a combination that maybe on paper doesn’t seem to be obvious to work, but the pairing is undeniably successful.

Speaking on the track, he adds:

This is a musical tribute to one of my heroes, Elliott Smith. His seemingly effortless ability to write songs with beautiful, catchy melodies overtop of complex and atypical harmony has always been a sort of “true north” for me in my own creativity. He would often perform all the instruments on his recordings, so I’ve done the same with this one. Listen to Elliott Smith if you don’t already. Figure 8 is my favourite record, if you need a starting point.
