Next week will see +/- {Plus/Minus} return with their new album, Further Afield, with release via Ernest Jenning Record Co.
“Gondolier” is a vibrant blend of indie rock with a blend of upbeat shimmering dance qualities, but also fragments of 90s indie/emo in the vein of early Death Cab for Cutie. The 7-minute track sees an expansive element and blend of sounds that continue to grow and morph in a most surprising and engaging manner.
Spreaking on “Gondolier”, singer/guitarist James Baluyut adds:
“I bought this little keyboard and showed my son how to use it one day. The initial passage you hear in the song is something he came up with. I took it from there and expanded it. It seemed like a weird little story: I gave something to my son, he gave something back to me, I expanded that. Maybe he’ll do something similar with his children. As I was writing the lyrics, it made me think about sons becoming fathers and teaching their sons to become fathers in this eternal loop.”
