Canadian singer-songwriter Aurora Bella returned with new album, Persephone, last month via Burning Talent Records.
The title track “Persephone” is a standout offering from the album that blossoms into a bluesy rocking “retelling of the ancient Greek myth of Persephone and Hades.” Her smokey vocals are a perfect partner in crime for the blitzing soulful blues-inspired sound that has elements of 70s classic rock with a modern take of its own.
Speaking on the track, Bella details:
“Persephone” is a blues-influenced indie rock retelling of the ancient Greek myth of Persephone and Hades. In this story, the goddess of springtime, Persephone, is led to the underworld by the god of the dead, Hades. During her time in the underworld, she eats six pomegranate seeds, and, because she has eaten food from the underworld, she is required to stay amongst the dead: one month for each pomegranate seed she had consumed. In the ancient world, this story is used to explain winter, and the emergence of spring each year. The song “Persephone” connects this classic tale with the emotions of the goddess being led to the underworld for the first time, and gives the story new life, as autumn fades into winter, and then spring comes once more.
