California’s Great Northern recently returned with their new single “Bad Light”, which they described as a “break up song for the summer of 2023”, a meditative and atmospheric synth-pop anthem.

The track shines with a big anthemic vocal performance, carried through murky moody synths and soundscapes that sound like a mix of synth-pop in the world of David Lynch.

On the song the band says:

Bad light is when the light is shown on something that you don’t want to see. You’re exposed & there’s no going back. It’s all the ways we turn ourselves inside out to avoid change…it’s all the ways we tighten before we release.

Bad light feels like a break up song for the summer of 2023 breaking up with your old self, parts of your life or a person. This is a song about change…and the undeniable necessity to confront that which no longer works. And finally…a liberation through acceptance.
