Norwegian indie outfit Wibes have warmed our hearts with their debut single “Mystic Whale Love”, a song that uses a recording of an arctic whale species, the Bowhead Whale, which is the longest-living whale species.

They use the haunting and fascinating song that transports the listener to a wonderous state of being, using the sound as the framework for something that is fascinating, tieing in elements of cinematic wonder into a melancholic state of being.

Speaking on the song the band adds:

This indie pop song uses a recording of an arctic whale species, the Bowhead Whale, which is the longest living whale species. The sample was from the Polar Sounds project from Cities and Memories, which has been featured in BBC and other news outlets. I was accepted as one of 100 artists to turn an arctic sample into a song.

My Norwegian bandmate Hansine and I decided to write a love song from the point of view of the whales. They’re solitary all year, but come back to the arctic for breeding season. We imagined a lonely and lovesick whale seeing a cute whale after spending all year alone, and falling in love on sight.

We had so much fun making the track that we decided to start this new band, Wibes. We previously made Euphoric Nontime (under Slow Proteo) which was featured by This Song Is Sick and several other blogs.
