Winnipeg outfit Virgo Rising like to describe themselves as “four sad people making songs in Winnipeg,” which made them a pretty damn good candidate to go on and cover Big Thief’s masterful “Real Love,” their first new piece of recorded music in nearly two years.

While in most cases the similarities and spot-on nature of a cover would detour me from it, it’s almost the way how uncanny their cover is to the original, while still adding just enough of its own flourishes and distinction, is truly something quite impressive and staggering in its own right.

Speaking on the cover, the band’s Emily Sinclair adds: “Big Thief is a big inspiration to us. We were drawn to Real Love for its raw and dynamic energy, and the fresh and emotional perspective it gives as a love song. As well, it was the first cover we ever played as a four piece, so it holds a special place in our hearts.”
