Mary Anne’s Polar Rig is a wild name for a band, but fitting once you get a listen to the Swedish band’s new single “Dopamine Detox.” It’s taken from their forthcoming new album, Makes You Wonder, which Rama Lama Records will release on March 24th.
The track features a raw garage rock interplay that has some of the eccentric art rock nature of Deerhoof with some oddly catchy moments that are quite simply a breath of fresh air and a source of joyous energy.
Speaking on the song, vocalist Malin Hofvander says:
“I guess the song is a bit of a satirical commentary on the ‘plugged in’ society of today. Our brains have gotten used to a constant stream of entertainment. Sometimes you love it, sometimes you feel trapped in it. The idea of detoxing yourself completely from dopamine seems pretty unrealistic to me but it’s an idea that stuck – what if I just turn it all OFF?”
