It’s her birthday and Lexie Carroll is going to cry if she wants to. The super talented 17-year-old singer-songwriter has returned with her latest single, the wonderfully titled “annual birthday cry.”

Carroll once again proves to have already fully formed a signature sound, one that seems wise beyond her years. It captures that feeling of life passing you by, the uncertainty that surrounds us, and a bit of that melancholic reflection that comes with each passing birthday.

Or as she puts it:

“I wrote ‘annual birthday cry’ just after I turned seventeen. I was feeling overwhelmed with growing up in a world that feels so dark and unsafe. I guess I’ve always just thought ‘oh when I’m older I’ll have this figured out’ and then each year goes by and I still have absolutely no clue how to be a human being! The song is a brain dump of all of my fears, and it’s not the happiest thing I’ve made but I think I just needed to get it all out.”
