Hartlepool indie-pop trio Mt. Misery, who won our hearts last year with their severely underrated debut album Once Home, No Longer, have since returned with their new EP, The Time It Takes, released in partnership with the PRS Foundation’s Open Fund.
“The Time it Takes” is yet another timeless slice of songwriting that blends the hushed classic folk sound of the many greats that came before, mixed with the modern lush soundscapes of bands like Real Estate and Belle & Sebastian.
Speaking on the song, the band’s Stephen McGrother digs deep into its meaning:
“’The Time it Takes’ is about wanting to wait for someone. I wrote it in the early hours of the morning to try and explain to them how I felt. I think the rest of the band liked it more than the person it’s about. Needless to say, it didn’t work out.”
The initial demo came together super quickly and is essentially a product of staying up all night messing about with a melodica I’d been given for Christmas. It’s a simple one, and it was a lot of fun working on the arrangement together as a band – taking out some of the unnecessary bits that my sleep-deprived self thought was a good idea. I’ve no shame in saying I really love the backing vocals, because I didn’t sing them!”
