South London duo Scrounge pack quite a punch on their new single “This Summer’s Been Lethal”, and although they sound like a band with at least four members, it’s just the duo of singing guitarist Lucy and drummer Luke.
The track brings me back to the heyday of 2000’s NME rock making the use of its brisk yet effective two-minute runtime, which creates an ethereal atmosphere and an uneasy attraction that feels larger than life – and totally danceable. Like a blend of Blood Red Shoes, The Subways, and a bit of Bloc Party, the track feels like it’s from an entirely different era of indie rock music – in the best way possible.
About the track, the duo adds:
“This Summer’s Been Lethal” is a retrospective track rooted in uncertainty, desperation and disappointment despite all the excitement of summer. Recorded on the hottest day of the year, we wanted to make something dismal yet danceable. With its pulsing drum patterns and ringing guitars, this track reminds the listener to persevere through the pessimism.
