Boston folk duo The Ballroom Thieves have been releasing a steady slew of impressive singles since. the departure of founding member Devin Mauch, with the remaining duo of Callie Peters and Martin Earley using this new dynamic as inspiration to record most of their new album live.
This includes the most recently shared single “Shine,” a track that feels like a raw confessional, a conversation that is meant for your ears only. The live take creates a devastating effect that rings true provides a different context that what the final form possibly could have been if they aimed for a traditional studio recording.
Earley details the heart of the song below, where we have also included a stream for “Shine.”
“Shine” is a traveling song we started writing before the Covid lockdown, when traveling was still one of our daily activities. It’s about lacking sleep while trying to keep up with the demands of our tour schedule. The hotel rooms all begin to look the same (no offense, Best Western), and you start to drift in and out of hazy twilight daydreams that often leave you wondering where you are in any given moment. Anyone who struggles with sleep for any reason knows this feeling well, but it can be difficult to put into words. We tried anyway, so we hope you enjoy our lullaby for insomniacs.
