Shaylee is the project of Portland, Oregon’s Elle Archer, who is gearing up for the release of their new album Short-Sighted Security, which will be released via Kill Rock Stars. Recorded almost entirely alone in a living room in Portland during the first lockdown of the COVID-19 pandemic, Elle did everything on this record including the guitars a prized Roland Juno 60, the drums, and the bass.
On single “Ophelia” 90s indie rock and power pop ideas run through it in a charming and winning fashion. There is a big expressive quality to it all that dazzles with big guitar hooks, colorful synths, and one hell of a catchy chorus.
Elle Archer describes the inspiration behind the song:
“Ophelia” is a song about the kind of romance that burns bright and fizzles out quickly. Sometimes love isn’t meant to last, but that doesn’t make it any less valid or visceral or real. These kinds of short, explosive relationships can provide some of the most memorable experiences life can offer, and my brief relationship with Ophelia during the first covid lockdown was no different. This song is an attempt to capture that lightning in a bottle to show the world what our love was like just as the wave began to crest.
