Detroit-based singer-songwriter Ally Evenson has released her fantastic new single “Bite My Tongue,” a powerful emotional gut-punch that tackles a tough subject for Evenson.

The song is about a traumatic experience that she went through four years ago and it has a slow-building folk sound with a raw garage sound that has a bit of an early Mitski feel to it. It’s hard not to get swept away by the rawness of the song and a chorus that acts as an unsuspecting earworm of sorts.

You can find her thoughtful explanation about the song, along with a stream of the track, both which are posted below.

The song, I guess, is derived from a specific experience I went through when I was 19. It’s one of those things where you look back you knew it was bad when you were going through it, but it took a few years to step back from it and realize how truly messed up it was. However, I think overall, the song is about dealing with trauma, and overcoming it. As you go through life and endure different experiences, traumatic or not, you take on different personality traits and change due to those experiences. For me, I’ve gotten less confrontational and more inclined to either shut down, or say something that isn’t entirely true just to please someone. So this song kind of touches on the hardship of working through that. We all deal with trauma in different ways, and this song is about how I suck at communication.
