Indie/folk duo Vern Matz had caught our attention over the past few months with a handle of moving tunes and in mid-November, the duo finally released their debut album Minnesota Dancing, which was produced by the band TOLEDO,.
With its release, we are here to share two standout offerings from the album. “Burnt Coffee” distills what the duo do so well, reaching into an arsenal of what makes classic folk songs work, adding a bit of alt-country flare and a tender spirit that feels very much their own. The emotional aspect of the track is taken from their idea of a “failing high school track star who prefers inebriation to friendship.”
There’s a free-flowing dreamy quality that actually plays with some elements of shoegaze and dream-pop on “Second Step,” the track that follows “Burnt Coffee.” The track tackles the always emotion topic of a break up that is meant as a departure from the folk sound that some may expect from them at this time, meant to “push the stereo and disquiet the heart.”
Both songs show the two sides of this band, one that may have gone under your radar, which is a shame. As this album is too good to pass up or ignore.
