Based out of Portland, Oregon, Maria DeHart makes dream pop seem effortless. This is abundantly clear seconds into her great new single, the appropriately titled “Pop Song,” which will close out her upcoming album Opening, which is due out on May 18.

DeHart has no problem crafting an irresistible melody or hook, with a bit of lo-fi charm and jangle to it that gives her a distinct feel. There are elements of artists like Snail Mail or Soccer Mommy here, with a strong emotional current running through every note and lyric. As she puts it, the song is “a punchy earworm about the one that got away.”
