Mohamed Assani is an award-winning sitar player and composer out of Canada, who is preparing for the release of his new album Wayfinder on April 24th. He has taken the sitar and brought it to new audiences with some new genre-bending ideas and collaborations.

Take “Black Sugar,” the lead single for his new album. The track sees Assani take the sitar and blend it with some more experimental elements of both hip-hop and electronica to create an instrumental track that actually feels exciting and fresh, not to mention emotional.

“This album of original music was created over many nights, between midnight and 5am, in the middle of the rainforest in the Kootenay Mountains of B.C., Canada. There were bears and cougars and other wildlife always close by and that wild atmosphere is captured in the music.”

You can find “Black Sugar” available to stream below and find the entire album available to preorder at his Bandcamp.
