When we last saw Toro y Moi perform it was last November where Chaz Bear and his band performed at Elsewhere, giving fans the first taste of his new album Outer Peace, which was released earlier this year via Carpark Records.
On November 9th he performed the second of two sold out nights at Brooklyn Steel in support of the new record, along with some spruced-up versions of old favorites with his razor-tight live band which includes bassist Patrick Jeffords, keyboardist Anthony Ferraro, and drummer Andy Woodward. This show was my first time seeing Toro y Moi since they played Music Hall of Williamsburg in 2015 and a lot has changed since then.
Chaz has become a true performer, navigating the stage with loads of confidence and ease, embracing the pop territory of the newer material while also just having a ton of fun leading the charge. The new songs sounded fully fleshed-out and lived in and had a vibrant laid back feel that also felt like the coolest party that you wish could last all night. The sold out crowd was one of the most diverse I’ve seen all year, which just speaks to the universality of his music.
