Irish punk rock outfit Girl Band returned with their new album The Talkies via Rough Trade Records on September 27th. They returned to the states for a handful of tour dates in support of the new LP and closed off the run with a performance in Brooklyn on October 8th at Elsewhere.
This was my first time seeing them perform but I had heard plenty about their reputation as a force live and they lived up to that and then some that night at Elsewhere. From the getgo, the crowd was on board with the band’s unique raw energy, the sort that may start out unconventionally but slowly and steadily build to a big breakthrough that suddenly has the crowd losing their collective minds and shoving into one another in response.
They ran through a solid chunk of The Talkies as well as their first record Holding Hands with Jamie, not to mention their blistering cover of Blawan’s “Why They Hide Their Bodies Under My Garage,” which played out like a feverish LCD Soundsystem Irish punk jam that got the craziest crowd reaction of the entire evening.
The set was just a bit over an hour long and didn’t feature much crowd interaction outside of the minimal small talk and banter. Girl Band was all business as expected and a tight punk show that delivered exactly as advertised.
