Pond returned with their new album Tasmania earlier this year via Spinning Top Music/Caroline Music and have been touring pretty steadily as ever in support of it. The tour brought them back to us here in New York for a performance at Warsaw in Brooklyn on September 21st. This was our first time seeing them since their performance last November at Bowery Ballroom.
For many fans, it seems like the trajectory and direction of Pond is what a lot of early fans of Tame Impala wanted them to engage in. Their live performance at Warsaw saw them channel the collision of colorful psych grooves and some underlying electronic and pop experimentation led by frontman Nick Allbrook, who continues to emerge as a more confident and steadfast frontman every time that I see Pond perform. Despite it being a tour in support of Tasmania, the band actually played more songs off of their 2017 breakthrough The Weather. Along with these newer songs, they dove a bit deeper, bringing back older material such as “Aloneaflameaflower,” which hadn’t been played since 2014.
