My Morning Jacket only played a handful of shows this year and picked Forest Hills Stadium as their New York City area show, which followed their slightly more intimate performance the night before at The Capitol Theatre, where they celebrated the 20th anniversary of their debut album The Tennessee Fire.
Kicking off the Forest Hills show were the ladies of Warpaint as the opener the packed crowd was in for a night of great music from the very first song played, “Heads Up.” Warpaint put on a fun show with an indie rock vibe that you can easily dance to.
My Morning Jacket took the stage and opened with “Compound Fracture” from their last studio album, The Waterfall. The boys from Kentucky leaned on a set of more rocking tunes and kept upbeat energy for their nearly three-hour show. It’s hard to say they played a lot of crowd favorites because the die-hard fans that make up the majority of the audience consider all their songs as favorites.
Through years of touring My Morning Jacket has proven themselves as one of the best live bands around that you’d be lucky to catch. Their songs cover all genres, for example “Off The Record” combines surf rock and reggae, “Circuital” builds from a quiet intro to a rockin folky song with funky bassline. Reaching into the genre of jam band stretching songs to eight and ten minutes it keeps things new for the band and their fans.
Hopefully, My Morning Jacket gets back in the studio soon to get some new music out to the masses and get back on the road where they belong.
