For the past six years, Keane has been on hiatus, with many wondering what the future would hold for the British four-piece. But this year the band have announced that they are not only back together but releasing their first new album in seven years with Cause and Effect set for release on September 20th via Island Records.
On August 6th the band returned to New York for a very intimate underplay performance at Bowery Ballroom that was of course very sold out, with secondary market tickets at astronomical prices and desperate fans looking for tickets outside of the venue close to showtime.
The show was strictly an evening with Keane, with no opener but just a solid 19-song performance of all the Keane oldies that fans would come to expect, as well as a a few newer offerings to preview their new album.
This was my first time seeing Keane perform in nearly 13 years, with their in-store performance at Borders in support of their sophomore album Under the Iron Se being the only time I saw them. So this was my first proper Keane show in a way and what a better place than at Bowery Ballroom. This was without a doubt one of the best concert crowds I’ve been a part of this year, with fans lining up hours beforehand in order to belt along all those familiar lyrics with all the bravado and confidence in the world, even taking lead singer Tom Chaplin and the rest of the band off-guard at times.
They gave fans exactly what they wanted, playing a good majority of their beloved debut album Hopes and Fears, with “Somewhere Only We Know” and “Everybody’s Changing” as the particular highlights, along with “Is It Any Wonder?” and “Crystal Ball” from their sophomore album.
