Bill Callahan returned with his great new album Shepherd In a Sheepskin Vest Album, which was released via Drag City. He’s been touring in support of the new album, which brought him to the tri-state area for a performance at the Murmrr Theatre in Brooklyn and then a performance at White Eagle Hall in Jersey City, New Jersey on July 12th.
This was somehow my first time seeing Callahan perform and I was amazed at the way the man can hold a rooms attention and totally floor them with his storytelling ambition and raw emotion. He was backed by a stellar band that effortlessly brought both his new material and old (as well as a few Smog offerings) to life and beautifully fill out the room.
