To celebrate its third anniversary, entertainment site Sweet Static threw itself a pretty swank birthday party featuring three of New York’s most buzzing bands at Alphaville. The lineup for the evening featured Grim Streaker, Public Practice, and Bodega. There was supposed to be a secret guest on the lineup (Big Bliss as the rumor goes) but when you’ve got those other three, there’s not much to complain about.
Grim Streaker took to the tiny stage first and brought their usual high-intensity blend of trash and punk. The band has a wild side, perfectly exemplified by lead singer Amelia Bushell, who looks at equally at home when snarling and rolling around the stage as well as when she’s riding a toy horse. The band seems tighter and more efficient with each successive gig and recently debuted their new single A.D.D. This is a band that plays a ton of gigs and rightfully deserves to be called one of New York’s hardest working bands, But with each new gig of theirs, it becomes more evident that it’s time to replace ‘working’ with ‘rocking’.
Public Practice, featuring members of Wall and Beverly, has a bit of that punk touch to them, but draw upon a more synth-oriented sound. They’ve only released a few tunes at the moment, but their live sets bring an almost jazzy seductive vibe that kept the audience craving more that night.
