Wisconsin-based band Phox is currently on hiatus, giving frontwoman Monica Martin a chance to embark on a solo career. She’s released two singles so far with “Cruel” and “Thoughtless,” with Republic Records, with a debut album on the horizon sometime soon.
Last night on January 23rd, Martin and her band (which includes fellow Phox member Matteo Roberts) stopped into New York for her debut New York City live performance as a solo artist, which was also only her second show ever.
You wouldn’t have known it from the confident and assured presence that she displayed to the sold out crowd. For those who have seen Phox before, it was great to see Martin on stage again and sharing some new material. Her voice is a thing to behold in the live setting, where it can really shine, just as well if not more so than it does on her recordings.
She performed an entrancing 9-song set featured eight of her new songs, as well as a cover of Bryan Adams’ Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman?. Based on the crowd’s reaction throughout her nearly hour long set, Martin has a head start towards what will be a very promising journey as a solo artist.
