The supremely talented multi-instrumentalist Kadhja Bonet has released one of the best albums of the year with Childqueen, released in June via Fat Possum. While one could argue that it’s in many ways an r&b album, the way it incorporates all sorts of genres along the way is the most amazing feat and speaks to her tremendous talent as an artist, one that is only getting started in many ways.
On June 28 she brought her tour in support of Childqueen to New York for a performance at Elsewhere. Backed by her razor-sharp live band, Bonet ran through many of the standouts of Childqueen in sequence, taking a break after side 1 to play some older songs, including some off her first release The Visitor such as standout “Honeycomb,” before finishing off side 2 of the LP. She also included a few great covers of classics such as Gloria Gaynor’s “Never Can Say Goodbye,” The Beatles, “Yesterday” and The Spinners’ “One of a Kind (Love Affair).”
With a wealth of talent, Bonet is an artist who should be playing much bigger places in no time. But for now, I will marvel at getting to see her work her magic in a room like Elsewhere.
