New York experimental outfit Gang Gang Dance returned on June 22 with Kazuashita, their first album in seven years (released via 4AD). They celebrated it’s release with a performance at Elsewhere, with opening sets from Deakin (of Animal Collective) and Nar.
After a brief but interesting set from solo artist Nar, Deakin gave us a trippy set of colorful jams from his 2016 release Sleep Cycle as well as a few Animal Collective cuts such as “Wide Eyed.”
This was Gang Gang Dance’s first performance of the new year which made the occasion that much more special. It was indeed a proper release show for both the album and this incarnation of the band. It had been about seven years since I had last saw them and they sounded even better than I even remembered. Lead singer Lizzi Bougatsos seemed taken aback by the crowd’s reaction and was both tentative and excited to be back on stage. For their first show of the run the band sounded great and gave us some equally trippy and dancable tunes to keep everyone happy.
