Last Flag Flying to open NYFF

Summer may have just started, but it’s already time to start thinking about fall film festival season, as the New York Film Festival has just announced its opening night selection for the 55th edition of the fest.

It’s Richard Linklater’s Last Flag Flying, a lyrical road movie about three aging Vietnam-era Navy vets, Doc (Steve Carell), Sal (Bryan Cranston) and Mueller (Laurence Fishburne). They’re reunited for the burial of Doc’s only child, who was killed in the early days of the Iraqi invasion. The film follows their journey up across the Eastern seaboard, a tale about the passage of time and the nature of truth. It already sounds like another instant classic from Linklater.

I’m already sold, and can’t wait for NYFF to be in full swing later this fall. For more on the festival, head to the official NYFF website.
